About this place
Yongin Parish is a Catholic parish in the Cheoin District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, and the Catholic Directory of Korea identifies it as the central parish of the Cheoin District. Its patron is St. Peter the Apostle, and it is an important pastoral center where Catholics in the central area of Cheoin-gu, Yongin, celebrate Mass and the sacraments and form a community of faith.
Having long served as a center of Catholic life in the area, Yongin Parish connects generations of Catholics in Cheoin through liturgy, the sacraments, faith formation, and community activities. St. Peter, its patron, is remembered as a leading figure among the Apostles, and under his patronage the parish continues its identity as a community that professes the faith and seeks to live the Gospel in the local area.
Its designation as a central parish of the district shows that Yongin Parish is not concerned only with its own internal parish life, but also serves as one of the points linking the various parishes and pastoral work of the Cheoin District. The community’s accumulated experience and Catholic heritage are connected with the newer surrounding parishes, making Yongin an important place for understanding both the history and present life of the Catholic Church in the area.
History & origins
Yongin Parish was established on June 5, 1959, with the arrival of Fr. Jo In-hwan. St. Peter the Apostle was chosen as patron, and the parish community took root in Gimnyangjang-dong. As Yongin grew in population and Catholic life expanded, the parish served for many years as a center of evangelization in the Cheoin area and became a mother parish from which several new parishes were later formed.
According to the diocesan record of the dedication of the parish’s fifty-year history, Songjeon Parish was the first to separate in 1995, followed by Cheolli, Mohyeon, and Samga-dong parishes. This reflected the gradual division of a once broad parish territory into pastoral units closer to the changing population and living areas of Yongin. In 2003 the parish also opened Seongmo Children’s Center, extending its presence into local education and care.
In 2013 the parish dedicated the volume Yongin Parish: Fifty Years of History (1959-2009), compiled from records and testimonies of former pastors, religious, and lay leaders. The project formally preserved the memory of a community that had not only endured over decades but had also helped give rise to new parishes and accumulated a substantial legacy of Catholic life in the Yongin area. The fifty-year history also preserved memories of priests, religious, and lay leaders connected with the parish and was shared within the community in printed and audiovisual form. This work helped trace the line of Catholic memory that had formed around Yongin Parish even after later territorial divisions created new parishes.
