About this place
Yongi-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the Pyeongtaek District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is St. Luke the Evangelist, and it serves as the center of a local community where Catholics in and around Yongi-dong, Pyeongtaek, live their faith through Mass and the sacraments. As an independent pastoral unit, the parish also supports catechesis and community life so that Catholics can practice their faith within the local area.
St. Luke is traditionally known as the evangelist who wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. By taking him as its patron, Yongi-dong Parish bears the vocation of listening to and proclaiming the Word as one mark of its communal identity. Visitors can best understand this place not merely as a church building, but as a parish community responsible for liturgy, sacramental life, and faith formation within the Pyeongtaek District of the Diocese of Suwon.
As residential areas in Pyeongtaek have expanded and local communities have become more distinct, Yongi-dong Parish helps Catholics encounter the Church’s liturgy and sacraments close to where they live rather than having to travel farther away. It is especially significant as a local foundation where newly settled families and Catholics of different generations can form relationships and continue their faith within one community.
History & origins
Yongi-dong Parish was established by the Diocese of Suwon on December 15, 2015. The Catholic Directory of Korea lists Bijeon-dong Parish and Jinsari Parish as its mother parishes, showing that a new pastoral community was created by reorganizing their territories in response to changes in Catholic population and local living patterns in the Pyeongtaek area. From its establishment, the parish took St. Luke the Evangelist as its patron.
After its foundation, the community developed the basis for Catholics in the newly organized area to continue their liturgical and sacramental life within an independent parish. The official chronology of the Diocese of Suwon records a Mass on December 14, 2025, marking the tenth anniversary of the establishment of Yongi-dong Parish. It was an occasion to look back officially on the decade in which the community had taken root as a local parish.
The available official sources clearly document the establishment, the relationship with the mother parishes, and the tenth-anniversary commemoration, but they do not provide enough detail to reconstruct every stage of church construction or relocation. Its history can therefore be described, within the verified evidence, as the development of an independent parish founded in 2015 to meet pastoral needs in the Pyeongtaek area and gradually establish its own communal life.
