History & origins

The Sisters of Community of Jesus Christ were founded in 1974 and entered Korea in 1989. The current Catholic directory gives 786 Seoljang-ro, Janghowon-eup, as both the congregation's representative address and the address of 예수 그리스도 피정의 집, showing that this site is a central place where the community's life and retreat apostolate meet.

In 2022, the Diocese of Suwon introduced the site as 예수그리스도 피정의 집 and described it as a place for individual retreat. During the COVID-19 period it was operating mainly for individual retreat, with Mass available at nearby Janghowon Parish. This record shows the congregation continuing its apostolate of prayer and retreat at the same Janghowon site.

The Korean Catholic Bishops' Conference now lists a retreat facility at the same address under the name “Bonitas Rest and Retreat House.” Public sources do not provide enough evidence to determine the exact date or formal process of any name change, but they do confirm the continuity of a retreat and hospitality apostolate at the same address under the same congregation. The site's history is therefore best understood as a continuing development of the congregation's Janghowon ministry of prayer and welcome rather than as a history tied to only one fixed name.

The public record suggests not that the retreat function disappeared and was later recreated, but that an apostolate of retreat and rest continued at the same Janghowon address under different forms of public presentation. The most reliable history therefore connects the congregation’s arrival in Korea and its present central address with the 2022 retreat notice and the more recent Bonitas listing, without inventing an undocumented date for a change of name. This approach keeps the continuing function of prayer and hospitality at the center rather than treating one name as the whole history of the place.
