About this place
연성 성당 is a Catholic parish of the Diocese of Suwon, belonging to the Siheung District of the Second Vicariate, with Saint Francis of Assisi as its patron. It is the local parish community in which Catholics in and around Yeonseong-dong, Siheung, live their faith through the Mass and the sacraments, together with the proclamation of the Word, catechesis, and service to their neighbors.
Behind the church are an outdoor altar and a Way of the Cross, extending the parish beyond its liturgical interior into a place for prayer and meditation. These spaces help the community connect ordinary parish life with prayer in a natural setting and express the parish's role as a place where local Catholics gather, remain together, and grow in Gospel-centered fellowship.
An important feature for understanding Yeonseong Parish is that its ordinary liturgical space and outdoor places for contemplation belong to the same parish setting. The official directory confirms Saint Francis of Assisi as patron, while diocesan records describe the outdoor altar and Stations of the Cross. Together they show a parish that embraces not only Mass and the sacraments but also silence and contemplative prayer as part of Christian life.
History & origins
Yeonseong Parish was established on January 30, 2001. In the Diocese of Suwon's record marking its tenth anniversary, the parish was described as the first parish established in the Siheung area and as a community that became a seedbed for evangelization in the region.
As the tenth anniversary approached, the parish developed the area behind the church as a place of prayer. Beginning in October 2010, it secured and prepared roughly 2,000 pyeong of land, creating an outdoor altar and a Way of the Cross. In October 2011, former pastors and parishioners gathered for a tenth-anniversary Mass of thanksgiving, followed by the blessing of the outdoor Way of the Cross.
This development shows that the parish's growth was not merely an expansion of facilities. It was also a process of remembering the community's past and widening the spaces in which prayer and evangelization could take place. Having begun as an early Catholic center in the Siheung area, the parish used its tenth anniversary to give visible form to that memory and to strengthen a foundation of faith for the generations that would follow.
The publicly verifiable milestones of Yeonseong Parish are concentrated on its establishment and the creation of the outdoor prayer area around its tenth anniversary. Rather than adding unverified details about later buildings or pastoral changes, these two milestones allow the history to be read as the growth of an early Siheung parish that secured a place for faith and then expanded it into a place of communal memory and prayer. The current directory, which continues to list the same parish in the Siheung district, supports that continuity.
