Yeongtong Yeongdeok Church

History & origins

Yeongtong Yeongdeok Parish was established on January 30, 1998. With Mary and Joseph of the Holy Family as its patrons, the parish formed a community in the Yeongtong-Yeongdeok area and gradually broadened its life through liturgy, evangelization, and ministry to children, young people, and young adults.

Catholic media records show that around 2008 the parish experimented with forms of worship and praise in which children and young adults could participate together and also organized sacred-music events open to parishioners and local residents. These initiatives show a community that, about a decade after its establishment, was moving beyond a period of settlement and developing pastoral forms that invited broader participation across generations.

In 2023, the parish celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary Mass. In preparation, the community set a goal of offering one million decades of the Rosary, undertook Scripture copying by local groups, and compiled records for the anniversary. The celebration, attended by the first pastor, former pastors, and parishioners, became an occasion to remember the faith that had shaped the parish from its beginning and to renew its direction for the future.

Taken together, the records show Yeongtong Yeongdeok Parish using its first decade to stabilize the community and broaden ministry across generations, and then using its twenty-fifth anniversary to gather that experience into a shared memory through prayer and Scripture. The worship and sacred-music initiatives of 2008 show openness toward different generations and the local community, while the Rosary and Scripture-copying projects of 2023 emphasize the transmission of faith within the parish. Though different in form, both belong to a continuing effort to connect generations and families under the patronage of the Holy Family.
