About this place
영통성요셉 성당 is a parish of the Diocese of Suwon in the Yeongtong District of the First Vicariate. Its patron is Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose fidelity, responsibility toward the Holy Family, and quiet obedience provide an important model for the parish's spiritual life.
Catholics in the Yeongtong area gather here for the Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, prayer, fellowship, and service. The parish provides a local ecclesial home in an urban setting, helping people of different generations and families form one community of faith. Activities such as pilgrimage and common prayer also connect parish life with the wider spiritual heritage of the Catholic Church in Korea.
Because Saint Joseph is named directly in the parish title, the patron is an important key to the identity of the place. The Catholic tradition that remembers Joseph as a model of family life, work, and faithful responsibility naturally connects with the daily lives of people moving among home, workplace, and parish in an urban setting. The parish is therefore both a local community and a place that supports faith within family life.
History & origins
Yeongtong St. Joseph Parish was established on January 29, 2002. The Catholic directory confirms the parish's official identity and its patronage of Saint Joseph, clearly marking the point at which an independent parish community took shape in the Yeongtong area.
A complete public chronology of the church construction has not been located, but a record of the parish's Lenten night pilgrimage in 2012 states that construction of the parish church was still in progress at that time. Parishioners walked from Euni Shrine to Mirinae Shrine, remembering the ministry and martyrdom journey of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon, and concluded the pilgrimage by praying for the successful completion of their new church.
This record shows that the parish's first decade involved not only building an organization but also the parallel work of establishing a church home and deepening a spirituality of pilgrimage. The present parish stands on that development as a local community in the Yeongtong District. Details of the construction chronology that are not supported by public sources have not been added.
The 2012 pilgrimage is particularly significant because it shows the community receiving the building process itself as a spiritual event. Parishioners walked a route associated with Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon while praying for the completion of their new church, linking the practical work of securing a parish home with the remembrance of Korea’s martyr tradition. Since public sources do not provide a sufficiently clear later timetable for completion or dedication, it is appropriate not to extend the chronology beyond what the record supports.
