About this place
영통성령 성당 is a parish of the Diocese of Suwon in the Yeongtong District of the First Vicariate and is currently listed as the district's central parish. Its patron is “the Mother of Christ,” and the faithful seek to imitate Mary's faith and obedience while living the Catholic life through the Mass, the sacraments, the Word of God, and parish community.
The parish is one of the local centers where Catholics in the Yeongtong and Giheung area celebrate the liturgy, receive formation, build fellowship, and practice charity toward their neighbors. Its long-established community and substantial church facilities support the faith life of different generations and also allow it to serve as a point of connection among communities within the Yeongtong District.
Its present role as a district-center parish means that Yeongtong Holy Spirit Parish is more than a church serving one neighborhood. While carrying out its own liturgical and pastoral life, it also serves as a point of connection between other parishes in the Yeongtong district and diocesan pastoral activity. This helps visitors understand the parish not only through the size of its church but also through its coordinating role within the local Church.
History & origins
Yeongtong Seongnyeong Parish was established on January 30, 1998. The community, formed during a period of new-town development, grew while facing the long-term task of securing and completing its own church building, a goal that came to fruition in the parish's tenth year.
On May 4, 2008, a dedication ceremony for the new church was celebrated with Bishop Choi Deok-ki presiding. The Diocese of Suwon recorded the completed building as having two basement levels and three floors above ground and described the dedication as the result of ten years of effort by successive priests and parishioners.
In 2023, the parish celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving for its twenty-fifth anniversary. In preparation, the community offered the Rosary, copied the Bible by hand, made pilgrimages to diocesan shrines, and took part in life-sharing initiatives. From its foundation through the church dedication and the twenty-fifth anniversary, its history shows a community maturing not only through a completed building but also through liturgy, prayer, and shared acts of faith.
These milestones show the stages of Yeongtong Holy Spirit Parish with relative clarity. In the first years, the main task was to establish a community in a new-town setting; the dedication of the church marked the fruit of a long building effort; and by the twenty-fifth anniversary the parish was using its established base to emphasize prayer, Scripture, pilgrimage, and the sharing of life. The history can therefore be read as a shift from the work of securing a church building to the life of a community seeking to live its faith both inside and beyond that building.
