About this place
여주 성당 is a parish of the Yeoju–Icheon District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in the central area of Yeoju. Its patron is Saint Paul the Apostle, and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mirinae assist in parish ministry. The Yeoju region preserves memories of martyrs as well as old mission stations and Catholic villages, and the parish helps connect this local history of faith with present-day parish life.
The church functions not only as a liturgical setting but also as a place for education and community fellowship. The parish’s long involvement in early-childhood education and local activities is also part of its communal heritage. Through several phases of church construction and renovation, parish facilities changed alongside the growth of Yeoju. The missionary spirit of Saint Paul provides an apt symbol linking the region’s historical Catholic presence with the continuing task of proclaiming the Gospel.
History & origins
The Catholic history of Yeoju reaches back well before the formal establishment of the parish. Records survive of martyrs from the persecution era, and a number of mission stations and Catholic villages developed in places such as Wanjang, Wonsimi, and Buonggol. A seminary was also located at Buonggol in Bupyeong-ri, Gangcheon-myeon, in the late nineteenth century, showing that Catholic communities had long been present in the wider Yeoju area.
Yeoju Parish was formally established on April 22, 1950. At the time, relatively few Catholic households lived in the town itself, and nearby mission communities such as Ogam, Dokbawi, and Hakdong provided an important foundation for the new parish. The Korean War soon disrupted this beginning, however. The first pastor entered military chaplaincy, and the community temporarily reverted to mission-station status.
After the armistice, a priest returned in 1953 and parish life was reorganized. Land was acquired in the present Hari area, and in 1954 a church was built with assistance from United States military personnel and labor contributed by the faithful. Early-childhood education also began in connection with the new church and later developed into Sohwa Kindergarten, broadening the parish’s role beyond liturgical life.
As the number of parishioners and pastoral activities increased, a larger church became necessary. A building committee was formed in 1979, construction began in 1981, and a new church was consecrated after about three years. The history of Yeoju Parish thus moves from old Catholic villages through wartime interruption and postwar reconstruction to the creation of a new parish complex. The parish later continued to preserve local memories of martyrdom while serving as one of the central Catholic communities of the Yeoju region.
