About this place

양수리 성당 is a parish of the Hanam–Yangpyeong District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in Yangseo-myeon and the surrounding area of Yangpyeong. Its patron is Saint John the Baptist. In the local setting where the North and South Han Rivers meet, the parish provides a regular center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and fellowship.

The current church includes the main worship space as well as catechetical rooms, meeting rooms, a dining area, and a rectory. This arrangement reflects the fact that a parish is not only a place for Mass but also a community for the formation of children and young people, meetings of parish groups, and interaction among the faithful. Because the permanent church was built only after a long period of using temporary facilities, the present complex also embodies the patience and cooperation of the local Catholic community.

History & origins

The Catholic community of Yangsuri did not begin as an independent parish but lived first as a mission station. In January 2003 it was elevated to parish status and became an independent community responsible for Catholics in the Yangseo-myeon area, under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist. Even after becoming a parish, however, it did not immediately have a permanent church.

In its early years, the community celebrated liturgy and conducted parish activities in prefabricated structures and containers. Preparations for a new church continued, and a groundbreaking Mass was celebrated in March 2008. Construction and fundraising took considerable time, while parishioners continued their religious life despite the inconvenience of temporary facilities.

The new church was dedicated on May 31, 2014, by Bishop Matthias Lee Yong-hoon of Suwon. The building, with one basement level and three floors above ground, includes the main church, catechetical and meeting rooms, a dining area, and the rectory. The dedication marked the transition from the mission-station period and temporary worship spaces to a permanent parish complex.

Around the same period, the Munhori Catholic community, which had been under Yangsuri Parish, grew into an independent parish. The history of Yangsuri therefore follows a sequence from mission station to parish, from temporary church to permanent church, and then to supporting the growth of another local community. This development shows the expansion of Catholic life across the eastern Yangpyeong area.
