About this place

양성 성당 is a parish of the Anseong District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in Yangseong-myeon and the surrounding rural area. Its patron is Saint Joseph the Worker, and the parish is connected with a mission station under its pastoral care. In a rural parish where communities are spread across villages and generations, mutual support is an important part of sustaining Catholic life.

The present church is especially meaningful because it was realized through the prayer, contributions, and cooperation of parishioners and neighboring Catholic communities. Donated devotional objects and the Stations of the Cross preserve traces of the many people who shared responsibility for the project. The church is therefore not only a place for liturgy, catechesis, and fellowship but also a physical record of sacrifice and mutual assistance within the local Church.

History & origins

The Parish of 양성 was established by the Diocese of Suwon on September 30, 2003. It began as a small rural parish in the Anseong area, with many elderly parishioners and limited financial resources. Under these conditions, providing a permanent church for the new parish was a difficult task, yet the community began preparing for a space that could support long-term parish life.

The construction process depended heavily on direct participation by the faithful. Catholic reporting records that a parishioner donated the church site, while others took part in tea sales and various fundraising efforts. Other parishes in the Anseong area also offered help. Elements of the church, including stained-glass Stations of the Cross and woodwork for the altar and tabernacle, were provided through individual and communal gifts. The project became an example of how a small rural parish could complete a difficult undertaking through wider ecclesial solidarity.

The new church was dedicated on May 1, 2008, by Bishop Matthias Lee Yong-hoon, then vicar general of the Diocese of Suwon. The years spent preparing the church overlapped with the period in which the new parish was taking root as an independent community. The dedication therefore represented more than the completion of a building; it marked the establishment of a stable foundation for the parish’s future life. The gifts and cooperation involved in the project also became part of the community’s shared memory and tradition of mutual support.
