About this place
양평 성당 is a parish of the Hanam–Yangpyeong District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in Yangpyeong-eup and nearby areas. Its patron is Saint Paul Chong Hasang, and the Sisters of the Holy Family assist in parish ministry. In a region where Catholic faith had taken root early around Yanggeun, the parish has long served as one of the local centers sustaining Catholic life.
The church and education facilities provide spaces not only for Mass and the sacraments but also for catechesis, parish groups, and fellowship. The community has experienced fire, reconstruction, and later renovation while continuing its life in the same local setting. These experiences form an important part of the parish’s identity, and the martyr witness of its patron Saint Paul Chong Hasang resonates naturally with the region’s long Catholic memory.
History & origins
Yangpyeong Parish was established on January 1, 1943, after being separated from Yongmun Parish. Catholic communities and memories of martyrdom had existed in the wider Yangpyeong and Yanggeun region long before then, but this was the point at which an independent parish centered on Yangpyeong-eup was formally organized. It subsequently became one of the centers for Mass, the sacraments, and Catholic formation in the area.
A major trial in the parish’s history came with an electrical fire in 1980. Diocesan records state that the church was destroyed, forcing the faithful to rebuild the physical center of parish life. The community quickly undertook reconstruction, and a new church was completed the following year. The loss and rebuilding showed in a tangible way how the parish’s sacred space was sustained through the collective effort of its members.
As the rebuilt church and educational facilities aged, they eventually required further renewal. The parish remodeled the church and education hall and celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving in 2012. At the same time it marked the sixty-ninth anniversary of the parish, linking the renovated facilities with the memory of earlier generations.
The history of Yangpyeong Parish has therefore included parish establishment, the destruction and rebuilding of its church, and subsequent renovation. Each stage required the community to preserve inherited faith while adapting its facilities for new pastoral needs. Repeated rebuilding and renewal also reflect the effort to continue ordinary liturgical and educational life even in the face of disruption.
