About this place
양동 성당 is a parish of the Yeoju–Icheon District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in Yangdong-myeon and nearby areas of Yangpyeong County. Its patron is Saint Isidore the Farmer. The rural setting of the parish and the choice of patron naturally connect Catholic faith with ordinary labor and life on the land.
The parish grounds include not only the main church but also space for education and a Stations of the Cross, allowing Mass and the sacraments to be joined with catechesis, prayer, and parish gatherings. Despite the different conditions of a rural parish compared with a large urban community, it remains the local center where Catholics gather regularly and sustain their common faith. The life of Saint Isidore also gives the community a spiritual image of serving God faithfully through daily work.
History & origins
The Parish of 양동 was established on February 14, 1997, when it was separated from Yongmun Parish. The new parish enabled Catholics in Yangdong-myeon, within the broad territory of Yangpyeong, to celebrate Mass and receive the sacraments through an independent local community. In its early years, the parish gradually worked to secure both a church and suitable facilities for education.
The construction of a new church became one of the major tasks of the young parish. Contemporary Catholic reporting described a single-story reinforced-concrete church built together with a separate two-story education building. Stations of the Cross were also installed on the hillside behind the church, linking the liturgical setting with spaces for formation and prayer. The new church was dedicated on March 16, 2003, by Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki of Suwon.
The parish marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of its establishment in 2022, and the diocese celebrated the occasion with an anniversary Mass in May. Although its history is comparatively recent, the sequence from separation from Yongmun Parish to the construction of a church and educational facilities shows how an independent Catholic community took stable root in a rural area. It also illustrates the steady work required to maintain parish life outside a large urban center.
