About this place

Wonsam Parish is a Catholic parish in the Cheoin District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is St. Paul Chong Hasang, and it serves Catholics in and around Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, through Mass and the sacraments. Unlike a large urban parish, it has the character of a community rooted in a rural township and its dispersed local neighborhoods.

St. Paul Chong Hasang, the parish patron, is a Korean martyr remembered for helping sustain the Catholic community during the persecutions of the late Joseon period and for working to bring clergy to Korea. Under his patronage, Wonsam Parish continues liturgy, faith formation, and community life, serving as a pastoral center that connects Catholics living across a broad rural area.

In a township such as Wonsam, where villages are spread across a broad area, the parish church becomes a common center where Catholics can gather regularly. Wonsam Church links smaller local communities and families and accompanies important moments of life—such as Baptism, marriage, and funerals—within the sacraments and prayer of the Church, illustrating the particular significance of a rural parish.

History & origins

Wonsam Parish was established on September 30, 2003, when it was separated from Yangji Parish. It took St. Paul Chong Hasang as its patron and began as a community responsible for the whole of Wonsam-myeon. From its early years, securing a permanent parish church became one of its major long-term tasks.

According to diocesan records, the parish began a “one pyeong per household” offering campaign in 2008 to support construction, and in 2010 formed a building committee to move into concrete preparation. After years of contributions and planning, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new church was held on April 9, 2011, and the community celebrated an entrance Mass in the new building on January 29, 2012.

Work continued after the entrance Mass, and the official chronology of the Diocese of Suwon records the dedication of Wonsam Church on April 19, 2015. Roughly twelve years after the parish was created, the formal dedication marked the completion of the long process by which the community that had separated from Yangji Parish established itself with a permanent church.

The early history of Wonsam Parish is therefore distinguished by a gradual process rather than by receiving a finished church at the moment of its foundation. Over more than a decade, a relatively small rural community gathered offerings, organized construction, and built the pastoral space that would anchor its independent parish life.
