About this place
Woncheon-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the Yeongtong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is St. Gabriel the Archangel, and it is the local parish center where Catholics in Woncheon-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, and nearby areas live their faith through Mass and the sacraments. Within the urban area of eastern Suwon, it serves as a pastoral center where generations of Catholics share liturgy and community life.
St. Gabriel the Archangel, the parish patron, is remembered in Scripture as the messenger who announces God’s will and the good news of salvation. Under his patronage, Woncheon-dong Parish gathers around the Word and the sacraments and supports Catholics through catechesis and community activities. Visitors can understand this place not simply as a venue for worship, but as the parish community responsible for the faith life of local Catholics within the Yeongtong District of the Diocese of Suwon.
Woncheon-dong is part of Suwon where residential patterns and parish boundaries have been adjusted as the city has grown. In that changing environment, Woncheon-dong Church serves as a point of continuity, helping Catholics maintain a sense of belonging and continue their faith despite shifts in administration and housing. It is also a place where the memory of the local community accumulates as different generations share Mass, formation, and service.
History & origins
Woncheon-dong Parish was established in 1995 after separating from Jidong Parish. Both the Catholic Directory of Korea and the Diocese of Suwon’s thirtieth-anniversary materials identify 1995 as the year the parish began, although they give different specific dates. For that reason, this history uses the common verified facts—the year of establishment and the separation from Jidong Parish—rather than choosing between the conflicting day-and-month records. The new parish took St. Gabriel the Archangel as its patron.
After its establishment, the parish worked to secure a permanent church. On May 5, 1999, Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki presided over the dedication of the new church, and the contemporary record notes that the parish had obtained its own church about four years after separating from Jidong. During construction, parishioners combined fundraising efforts with the offering of the Rosary, strengthening both the physical church and the bonds of the community.
As the local population and parish territories changed, part of the parish area was transferred to Maetan-dong Parish in January 2018. In 2025, for the thirtieth anniversary of its establishment, the parish published Woncheon-dong Parish: Thirty Years of History, based on accumulated records and interviews with former pastors, and celebrated an anniversary Mass. This became an occasion to preserve the memory of the community systematically even as its pastoral boundaries had changed with urban growth. During the construction of the church in 1999, some areas were also reassigned toward Ingye-dong, Yeongtong, and Yeongdeok parishes. Parishioners combined fundraising through food and goods sales with the offering of one million decades of the Rosary. The fact that church construction and territorial reorganization occurred at the same time illustrates the rapid urban growth and parish restructuring of eastern Suwon.
