About this place
Wolpi-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the Ansan District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patrons are the Korean Martyrs, and it is a local parish where Catholics in Wolpi-dong, Ansan, and nearby areas form a community around Mass and the sacraments. Within a residential area of Ansan, it serves as a pastoral center for liturgy, faith formation, and parish community activities.
Taking the Korean Martyrs as patrons gives the parish a particular connection to the witness of Korean Catholics who remained faithful amid persecution. Wolpi-dong Parish carries this memory into ordinary parish life, linking generations and neighborhood groups and helping local Catholics participate in the liturgy and sacramental life of the Church close to where they live.
Because Wolpi-dong Parish emerged amid the urban expansion of Ansan, its church has served to gather Catholics close to their everyday living area. Devotion to the Korean Martyrs is not limited to remembering persecution in the past; it also provides a spiritual background that calls the community to witness to the faith through ordinary choices and service.
History & origins
Wolpi-dong Parish was established on September 14, 1995, as one of the new parishes created by the Diocese of Suwon in the Ansan area. Contemporary reporting described it as a new parish responsible for Wolpi-dong, Seongpo-dong, and Bugok-dong, while later testimony from the parish community records that it began by separating from Wadong Parish. Its creation reflected the division of a growing urban area into pastoral units closer to local Catholics.
As Catholic life continued to expand in northern Ansan, Catholics in the Seongpo-dong area were separated into another parish community in 2006. Wolpi-dong Parish also went through the process of securing and renewing its own church facilities; a 2014 reflection by the parish council president recalled that the community had participated in two church dedications during roughly the first twenty years after its establishment.
The official chronology of the Diocese of Suwon records a Mass on December 13, 2020, marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the establishment of Wolpi-dong Parish. It commemorated a quarter century that had begun with the creation of the parish in 1995 and continued through the formation of a daughter parish and the development of its own worship spaces and community. The history of Wolpi-dong Parish thus belongs to the broader story of parish territories becoming more finely organized as the city of Ansan expanded.
