About this place

Wanggok Catholic Church is the parish church of a parish in the Gunpo-Uiwang District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Peter Yu Tae-chol as its patron saint. It is the central church where Catholics from Wanggok-dong and nearby areas of Uiwang gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

The present church includes a tapestry crucifix behind the altar, the fourteen Stations of the Cross, and sacred art centered on Korean martyr saints. Together with the parish’s patronage of the young Korean martyr St. Peter Yu Tae-chol, these works help keep the memory of Korea’s martyrs present within the ordinary liturgical space of the community.

History & origins

Wanggok Parish was established on September 26, 2006, when it was separated from Ojeon-dong Parish. Records of the Diocese of Suwon describe the two communities as mother and daughter parishes and note that, even after the separation, Ojeon-dong continued to support Wanggok, including fundraising to help build its church.

The construction of an independent church moved forward through a design competition in 2008 and preparations for construction in 2009. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 14, 2009, and the parish celebrated its first Mass in the new building on July 17, 2011. Financial difficulties, however, meant that more time was needed before the church could be formally dedicated.

The community continued to prepare for completion through the Rosary, bazaars, fundraising Masses, and pledges for the building fund. Finally, on September 24, 2023, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided at the dedication of the church. Coming twelve years after the first Mass in the building, the dedication marked the culmination of a long process in which a parish born by separation established and completed a church of its own.
