About this place
Taepyeong-dong Catholic Church is the church of Taepyeong-dong Parish in the Seongnam District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is Saint Francis of Assisi. The church serves Catholics in and around Taepyeong-dong, Sujeong-gu, Seongnam, as a center for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish community life. In an older urban neighborhood with varied living conditions, the parish gathers the faithful into one worshiping community and connects faith with service and sharing toward neighbors.
The present church includes the main worship space together with areas for Eucharistic adoration, education, meetings, and fellowship. At the parish's twenty-fifth anniversary in 2024, the community renewed its commitment to reach out to people in difficult circumstances and to serve the local neighborhood. With Saint Francis of Assisi as patron, Taepyeong-dong Church can be understood as a center of Catholic life in Seongnam where liturgy and communal charity are closely connected.
History & origins
Taepyeong-dong Parish was established on January 26, 1999, after separating from Sujin-dong Parish. As the Catholic population and residential districts of central Seongnam became more differentiated, a new parish community was formed around the Taepyeong-dong area. From its foundation, the parish took Saint Francis of Assisi as its patron, giving the community a clear spiritual identity.
A permanent church was built relatively soon after the parish was founded. On October 4, 2001, Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki presided over the dedication of the new church. The building included the main church, a Eucharistic adoration chapel, classrooms, a hall, a rectory, and a convent, giving the young parish a stable foundation for liturgy and formation.
In October 2024, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided over the Mass marking the parish's twenty-fifth anniversary. Although the neighborhood and the number of parishioners have changed over time, the parish has continued its Catholic life in Seongnam with an emphasis on sharing and local evangelization. The 1999 separation, the 2001 dedication, and the twenty-fifth anniversary remain key milestones in the parish's establishment and growth.
