About this place
Suridong Parish belongs to the Gunpo–Uiwang District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves Catholics in Suridong and nearby parts of Gunpo. Its patron is St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, and the parish provides a local setting for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community gatherings in an area closely associated with Mt. Surisan.
The present church is notable for a design that draws the surrounding natural landscape into the liturgical environment. A large stained-glass installation behind the altar and the visual relationship with the mountain scenery allow worshippers to remain conscious of the local setting even inside the church. Suridong Parish represents a community formed during the development of Gunpo's newer residential districts and rooted around a church designed in dialogue with its natural surroundings.
History & origins
Suridong Parish emerged as Catholic communities in Gunpo were reorganized in response to residential expansion and a growing number of faithful. A parish genealogy published by Beomgye Parish shows the sequence of local separations through Myeonghak and Hogye-dong that eventually led to Suridong, while the official Catholic directory records January 28, 2003 as the parish's date of establishment.
After becoming independent, the community set about building its own church. The new building was designed to make the most of its location beside Mt. Surisan, with a basement and three above-ground floors providing spaces for liturgy, catechesis, and parish meetings. A large stained-glass feature behind the altar was highlighted as a defining architectural element linking the church interior with the mountain landscape outside.
On June 17, 2007 Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki presided at the dedication of the new church, giving the parish a stable physical home. The history of Suridong thus fits within the broader development of Catholic life in Gunpo: existing parishes divided as the population changed, a new community became independent, and it established a church shaped by the natural setting of the district.
