About this place
수진동 Catholic Parish belongs to the Seongnam District of the Second Vicariate in the Diocese of Suwon, and its patron is Saint Joseph the Worker. The official Catholic directory in Korea also records the presence of the Inbo Eucharistic Sisters in the parish. In the older urban area of Seongnam, the parish supports the ordinary life of faith through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, devotions, and parish fellowship.
With the foundation of a long-established local Catholic community, 수진동 Parish continues today as part of the living Church of Seongnam alongside the surrounding parishes. The patronage of Saint Joseph and the collaboration of a Eucharistic religious community evoke Catholic attention to work, family life, and Eucharistic spirituality, while the parish itself provides a place where the faithful form relationships and community as well as celebrate the liturgy and receive formation. Visitors should therefore understand it not merely through its historical age, but above all as a living parish responsible for sacramental and communal life in the Seongnam area today.
History & origins
The predecessor of 수진동 Parish was the Dunjeonmal mission station, formed around 1900. The faithful received the sacraments under Baekdong Parish in Seoul, and in April 1950 the mission station was elevated as Dunjeon-ri Parish. Only two months later, however, the Korean War broke out. The first pastor, Father Park Ji-hwan, left for military chaplaincy, and the parish ceased normal operation and reverted to mission-station status.
After the war, the community passed through the jurisdiction of parishes such as Sindang-dong and was re-established as a parish in 1962. Rapid development of the Seongnam area and the relocation of residents from demolished settlements in Seoul then transformed the pastoral environment. When construction of a military airfield required the former church to be removed, the parish moved toward the present urban area around 1970 and adopted the name Seongnam Parish. The first floor of the new church was completed in 1971, followed by enlargements and renovations in 1978 and 1995 that produced the present form of the church.
As Seongnam grew, the parish also expanded and successively gave rise to new parishes including Dandae-dong, Seongnam-dong, Sinheung-dong, and Taepyeong-dong. After Seongnam-dong Parish was established, the mother community came to use its present name, 수진동 Parish. Through this process it became one of the principal roots from which the parish network of Seongnam developed.
Its history also includes a strong social dimension. In 1975 the parish helped establish Seongdo Credit Union to assist residents suffering from poverty and high-interest debt, and it supported childcare and kindergarten education. These efforts show that the history of 수진동 Parish is not only a history of church buildings, but also the story of a Catholic community helping to build the social foundations of a rapidly formed city together with its neighbors. These forms of local service show that, during a period of rapid urban formation, the parish did not separate the life of faith from the practical needs of its neighbors.
