About this place
Suji Parish belongs to the Suji District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves as a center of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and Catholic community life in the Suji area of Yongin. Its patron is St. Siméon-François Berneux, the Paris Foreign Missions bishop martyred in Korea, and the parish enshrines a relic of the saint as part of its spiritual memory of martyrdom.
Growing amid rapid residential development and population increase in Suji, the parish has welcomed people of many generations and numerous newcomers to the district. The present church, achieved only after years of provisional arrangements and construction, now provides the central setting for worship, formation, and fellowship. Suji Parish is a representative example of a Catholic community that expanded with a new urban residential area and continually developed its pastoral infrastructure in response to local growth.
History & origins
Suji Parish began in response to residential development and a rapidly increasing Catholic population. On February 3, 1994 territory was separated from Singal Parish and organized as a quasi-parish. The new community numbered only ninety households and 296 people, and it used a prayer house of the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Fatima in Dongcheon-ri as a temporary church. In January 1995 it was elevated to full parish status.
As the community continued to grow, it began securing a permanent home and purchased a church site in 1996. A groundbreaking Mass for the new church was celebrated in November 1998 with Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki. During construction, the parish moved into the basement of the present building in 1999 so that Mass and community life could continue on site. In 2001 the faithful entered the new church, ending the long period of provisional worship spaces.
After further completion of the church and parish facilities, the new church was formally dedicated on May 20, 2006. Around the same period, a relic of the parish patron, St. Siméon-François Berneux, was enshrined there and became an important spiritual sign for the community. Suji's history is therefore a progression from a small quasi-parish in a rapidly developing new town to a settled parish with its own church and a strong memorial connection to a martyr saint.
