About this place
Sosabeol Catholic Church is a parish in the Pyeongtaek District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in the Sosabeol development area and nearby parts of Bijeon-dong. The parish is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi and is a relatively young community created in response to major housing development and population growth in Pyeongtaek.
Today the parish supports local Catholic life around its own church, but it began without a permanent church building and initially used space at neighboring Bijeon-dong Catholic Church. This background shows that the parish first existed as a community of people and liturgy before it possessed its own building. Visitors can therefore understand Sosabeol as a modern example of a Catholic community formed alongside new-town growth and later settled into an independent church.
History & origins
Sosabeol Parish was established on December 20, 2016, in response to the expansion of new residential areas in Pyeongtaek. Although it began as an independent parish, it did not yet have its own church and celebrated Mass in the small chapel of neighboring Bijeon-dong Catholic Church. For about a year and a half, the new parish first formed its liturgical and communal life while preparing a permanent church.
Construction of the new church became the central process of establishing the parish physically. On February 25, 2018, a Mass was celebrated to mark the raising of the main structure. On July 14 of the same year, the parish celebrated its entrance Mass and moved from the temporary space at Bijeon-dong into its own church. At that Mass Bishop Linus Lee Seong-hyo emphasized that the new building should be accompanied by the building up of each believer as an “inner temple.”
After moving into the church, Sosabeol continued to build relationships within the Pyeongtaek district through joint confirmations, youth ministry, and regional events. The sequence from foundation to temporary worship and finally to a permanent church illustrates the characteristic growth of a new parish created to meet pastoral needs in a developing urban district.
