About this place
Songtan Parish is a Catholic parish of the Diocese of Suwon and has long served as a center of Catholic life in northern Pyeongtaek, especially around Sinjang-dong and the wider Songtan area. Because the parish took shape amid the rapid social transformation that followed the Korean War and the development of the nearby U.S. air base, its identity is closely intertwined with the modern urban and demographic history of Songtan.
Alongside Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis, the parish has maintained relationships with its neighborhood through educational and charitable activities, including long-running kindergarten ministries. In a district shaped by migration and changing livelihoods, Songtan Parish offered new residents a place to become rooted in a Catholic community. It remains one of the older Catholic communities of northern Pyeongtaek, carrying forward the evangelizing work that began amid the upheavals of the postwar period.
History & origins
Songtan was originally a largely rural area, but it changed rapidly after the Korean War when a U.S. air base was established nearby. Refugees and people seeking work moved into the district, increasing both the population and the need for Catholic evangelization. In 1954 Fr. Ryu Su-cheol of Seojeong-ri Parish acquired land in Sinjang-ri and spent roughly a decade building a missionary base. That work led to the establishment of Songtan Parish, separated from Seojeong-ri in August 1965.
The new parish began in a one-story wooden building with a slate roof, and a rectory was added the following year. As the Catholic population grew, a new church was built and dedicated in 1972. Urban planning in 1974 then required part of the building to be demolished, so the community once again worked together to repair and reconstruct its church, completing the work in 1979. The sequence shows how strongly the changing cityscape affected the physical history of the parish.
Continued growth led to the separation of Songseo Parish in 1982. From the 1960s onward, Songtan also reached local families through kindergarten ministry and other forms of service. Its history is therefore one of evangelization in a newly transformed postwar city: beginning with mission work, repeatedly rebuilding its church, and eventually giving rise to another parish as Catholic life expanded in northern Pyeongtaek.
