About this place
Songseo Parish is a Catholic parish of the Diocese of Suwon serving northern Pyeongtaek, including Seojeong-ri and neighboring districts. Dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, it is a center where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and sustain parish community life. Over many years the parish has shared in the demographic and urban changes of the region while maintaining continuity in its Catholic identity.
After becoming an independent community, Songseo also became a source from which later parishes in the surrounding area were formed. Records of priestly and religious vocations and of service to local neighbors show that the parish developed as more than a place for worship alone: it became part of the social and spiritual fabric of northern Pyeongtaek. Today Songseo Parish carries forward that accumulated history while continuing to serve the Catholic life of the region.
History & origins
After the Korean War, the establishment of a U.S. air base in the Songtan area brought rapid population growth, and the number of Catholics in northern Pyeongtaek also increased. Songtan Parish acquired a church site in Seojeong-ri in 1978, recognizing the need for another parish. On March 4, 1982 the new community separated as “Songtan Second Parish,” with about 1,280 faithful, and in June of that year it took the name Songseo.
The first parishioners used a private house and then a tent as temporary worship spaces while preparing a permanent church. Construction began on the present site in the summer of 1982 and proceeded in stages, with the church building completed in 1985. On September 19, 1987 Bishop Angelo Kim Nam-su presided at its dedication, giving the parish a formally established liturgical home.
As the Catholic population continued to grow, Songhyeon Parish was separated from Songseo in January 1998. The community later gathered its experience of growth and division into a written record, presenting a parish history on the thirty-fifth anniversary in 2017. Songseo's development thus reflects the wider history of northern Pyeongtaek: a parish formed amid postwar urban growth, building its own church and eventually becoming the mother community of another parish.
