About this place
Songsan Saesol-dong Parish belongs to the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves Catholics in the eastern district of Songsan Green City in Hwaseong. As a parish born within a newly developed urban area, it has a distinct character: residents settling into a new community build Catholic life together through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish fellowship.
Its patron is St. Francis of Assisi. The church incorporates a visual sign inspired by Francis, whose spirituality emphasized poverty, peace, and love for creation, giving the young parish a recognizable spiritual identity. Though its institutional history is still short, Songsan Saesol-dong Parish has grown from an improvised beginning into an established Catholic community through the participation of its faithful and support from the diocese, developing alongside the surrounding new town.
History & origins
Songsan Saesol-dong Parish was established on December 15, 2020 as a new Catholic community for the developing Songsan Green City area. At first it had no church of its own and operated a temporary chapel and parish office within Daehak-dong Parish in Ansan. Because the new parish was small and its early years coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, securing the resources for a permanent church was particularly difficult.
In 2021 the lay apostolate council of the Second Vicariate provided financial assistance for the construction of a new church, and the Diocese of Suwon subsequently opened a public process to select a contractor. Diocesan construction support also followed, enabling the community to move from a temporary setting toward a stable and independent pastoral base.
The parish later adopted St. Francis of Assisi as its patron, giving a clear spiritual direction to the young community. A Franciscan symbol installed at the church recalls the saint's praise of the Creator and creation even amid suffering. The history of Songsan Saesol-dong is therefore the history of a small parish born with a new town, passing through a provisional phase and gradually building the physical and spiritual foundations of a permanent Catholic community.
