About this place
Songjeon Parish is a Catholic parish of the Diocese of Suwon serving the Idong-eup area of Yongin, with the Gospel image of the Good Shepherd forming part of its communal identity. In a district where rural and urban patterns meet, the parish provides a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and shared Catholic life, remaining a stable local community amid continuing social change.
The present church is known for an interior making extensive use of wood and for architectural elements intended to evoke a Korean traditional atmosphere. Its significance is closely connected with the process by which parishioners built the church through collective effort rather than with architectural display alone. Centered on that church, Songjeon Parish continues to sustain Catholic life across generations and serves as a lasting pastoral base in southeastern Yongin.
History & origins
The Catholic community at Songjeon developed first as a mission station before becoming a parish. Regional church-historical sources record that the Songjeon mission station was elevated to parish status in July 1995, and the Catholic directory likewise places the foundation of the parish in 1995. Once independent, the community made the construction of its own church one of its central tasks.
Groundbreaking took place in 1996, and construction continued for about four and a half years. The parish purchased materials directly and contracted different stages of the work separately, a method that helped reduce building costs. The lengthy process also allowed attention to structural stability, while extensive use of wood inside the church was intended to give the building a distinctively Korean traditional character.
On May 1, 2001 Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki presided at the dedication of the new church, bringing the long construction period to completion. Songjeon Parish has continued its local Catholic life around that church ever since. Its movement from a mission station to an independent parish, followed by a church built with direct participation from the community, remains the defining pattern of its history.
