About this place

Songhyeon Parish is a Catholic parish of the Diocese of Suwon in Pyeongtaek, with St. Paul Chong Hasang, a Korean martyr, as its patron. Formed after separating from Songseo Parish, the community grew along with expanding residential districts in northern Pyeongtaek and now supports local Catholic life through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish fellowship.

As Songhyeon itself grew, it in turn became a base from which neighboring communities such as Godeok and Sosabeol were separated as independent parishes. This pattern shows how a parish adapts its pastoral boundaries as the Catholic population expands and new communities emerge. Songhyeon Parish is therefore significant not only for its own history but also for the network of parishes that developed around it in the wider Pyeongtaek area.

History & origins

Songhyeon Parish was established in January 1998 after separating from Songseo Parish in response to the growing Catholic population of northern Pyeongtaek. About three thousand faithful formed the new community at its beginning. Dedicated to St. Paul Chong Hasang, the parish developed rapidly alongside residential expansion and population growth in the area, building the pastoral structures required for independent parish life.

As Songhyeon itself expanded, new communities became necessary within its territory. Godeok Parish and Sosabeol Parish were later separated from Songhyeon, making it a mother parish in the continuing subdivision of pastoral care across Pyeongtaek. The pattern is central to Songhyeon's history: a community born through separation eventually became capable of helping new parishes come into being.

In 2023 the parish marked its twenty-fifth anniversary with a Mass presided over by the diocesan bishop and presented a written twenty-five-year history. The anniversary was not confined to an internal celebration; the community also made substantial donations for overseas mission and for the construction of Godeok Parish's church. The commemoration therefore linked memory of its own foundation with a renewed sense of solidarity toward the wider Church.
