About this place
Soha-dong Parish is a Catholic parish of the Gwangmyeong District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving as a center of liturgical and communal life for Catholics in and around Soha-dong, Gwangmyeong. Its patron is St. Peter Yu Tae-chol, a Korean martyr, and the Sisters of Charity of Jesus participate in the parish apostolate. The parish's identity is rooted in celebrating Mass and the sacraments, providing catechesis, and fostering communion among the faithful.
Amid the growth of southern Gwangmyeong and continuing changes in the urban environment, Soha-dong Parish has long provided a place where local Catholics of different generations and circumstances gather in faith. Today the community draws on the witness of its martyr patron while preparing its parish space for changing local needs, seeking to sustain Catholic life and pass the faith on to future generations.
History & origins
Soha-dong Parish was established on December 20, 1989. The official Catholic directory records this date as the foundation of the parish, and in 2010 the community marked its twenty-first anniversary with a celebration attended by about seven hundred faithful. The event shows how the parish had steadily grown and established itself within the Gwangmyeong area after its foundation.
Over the following decades, rapid urbanization transformed Soha-dong and the pastoral environment surrounding the parish. In response, the community continued to adapt the spaces and structures needed for Mass, catechesis, and parish life rather than treating the church building as something static and detached from local change.
In 2026 the Diocese of Suwon's construction office announced a design competition for the construction of a new Soha-dong church. The project represents a new stage in a history that has already extended well beyond three decades: a community founded in a developing district has become firmly rooted there and is now preparing the physical and pastoral setting in which the next phase of its life can continue.
