About this place
Seryu-dong Catholic Church is one of the older parishes of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in the Seryu-dong area of Gwonseon-gu, Suwon through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The parish is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi and for many years has been a center of Catholic life in southern Suwon. A Franciscan community of the Order of Friars Minor is also associated with the same site, giving the parish a distinctive connection with Franciscan spirituality.
The parish is important not only for its present community but also as a historical foundation from which neighboring parishes developed. The Diocese of Suwon records Gosaek-dong and Maegyo-dong as communities that were separated from Seryu-dong. Visitors can therefore understand the church not simply as an old parish building, but as a local mother parish that helped Catholic communities expand alongside the growth of Suwon.
History & origins
Seryu-dong Parish was established on October 4, 1968, under the patronage of St. Francis of Assisi. As southern Suwon urbanized, the Catholic community grew with it. At a time when there were relatively few parishes in the area, Seryu-dong served Catholics across a broad territory and later became a foundation from which new parish communities could emerge.
As the community expanded, Gosaek-dong Parish and Maegyo-dong Parish were separated from Seryu-dong. This shows that Seryu-dong’s growth was not only an increase in its own size, but also a process of creating new pastoral units in response to population and neighborhood change. The physical church was likewise renewed, and diocesan records state that the present church was dedicated in 1996.
For the fortieth anniversary of the parish in 2008, the community organized Masses with former pastors, pilgrimages, a historical photo exhibition, and a time capsule. These events were more than a celebration of dates: they allowed several generations to remember the parish together and pass its faith forward. The history of Seryu-dong is therefore one of growth, the birth of new parishes, and the preservation of communal memory around its present church.
