About this place
Seosin Catholic Church is a parish of the Hwaseong District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in Seosin-myeon and nearby parts of Hwaseong. The Catholic Church in Korea directory lists it among the parishes of the Hwaseong District, confirming its role as the local center where Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life are carried out.
Because Seosin-myeon forms a broad living area in western Hwaseong, a local parish provides an important place for Catholics to participate regularly in liturgy and the sacraments close to home. Seosin became independent after separation from Sagang Parish and later secured a church of its own, so the present building represents the community's territorial independence and settlement.
The current church was designed not only with a sanctuary but also with catechetical and meeting rooms, allowing liturgy, education, and fellowship to take place in one parish complex. Seosin Catholic Church can therefore be understood not merely as a place for Mass but as an everyday center that sustains Catholic formation and community relationships in western Hwaseong. Rather than relying on changing details of current programs, the most stable and accurate way to understand Seosin is through its verified identity as an independent Hwaseong District parish and the parish complex that combines worship, education, and meeting spaces.
History & origins
Seosin Parish began as an independent community in 1995 after separation from Sagang Parish. This gave Catholics in the western Hwaseong area of Seosin a local parish where they could sustain parish life without traveling to Sagang. Public sources do not provide a detailed account of every temporary facility or step in the early construction process, but they do establish the overall movement from parish independence toward a church of its own.
A major turning point came in 2011, when the present church was completed. The Catholic Times records that the new church was dedicated on October 2 of that year in Maehwa-ri, Seosin-myeon, Hwaseong. Approximately sixteen years after separation from Sagang Parish, the local community thus gained a formally dedicated church of its own.
The new complex was built with one basement level and two floors above ground. In addition to the church and parish office, it included catechetical rooms, meeting rooms, and a kitchen. This arrangement shows a parish center designed so that Catholics dispersed across a broad rural and coastal area could continue not only liturgical worship but also instruction, meetings, and common activities in one place.
The publicly documented history of Seosin is not as detailed as that of some older parishes, but two points are clear: separation from Sagang in 1995 and dedication of an independent church in 2011. The years between them can be understood as the period in which the local Catholic community took root as a parish and gradually created its own stable place for liturgy and formation. Because detailed records of the early period are not publicly available, the location of a temporary church or an unverified construction starting date should not be inferred. Even so, the two firmly documented points—parish independence and dedication of the new church—clearly show the community acquiring its canonical and physical foundations in sequence.
