About this place
Seopangyo Catholic Church is a parish in the Bundang District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has St. Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea’s first Catholic priest, as its patron saint. It serves Catholics in the Seopangyo area of Bundang-gu, Seongnam, for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life, while the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul participate in its pastoral ministry. Although it is a relatively young community formed together with the new town, its patron links it to the Korean Church’s tradition of martyrdom.
When the church was being built, the Diocese of Suwon described the surrounding Seopangyo area as a place that preserves memories connected with missionaries during the period of persecution and with the route along which the remains of St. Andrew Kim Taegon were carried. For this reason, having St. Andrew Kim Taegon as patron is more than a name. It creates a symbolic link through which a parish in a newly developed city remembers Korea’s older Catholic tradition of martyr faith and seeks to carry that faith into contemporary family and local community life.
History & origins
Seopangyo Parish was established on September 1, 2009, as an independent pastoral community for the growing Catholic population of the newly developed Pangyo area. The parish chose St. Andrew Kim Taegon as its patron and, before it had a permanent church, began to build the basic structures of community organization and liturgical life.
About one year and two months after its establishment, a groundbreaking Mass for the new church was celebrated on November 13, 2010, at the construction site in Unjung-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam. Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided, with priests and parishioners taking part. As they prepared for construction, parishioners offered the Rosary and renewed their commitment to Sunday Mass as shared acts of faith. The building plan included not only the main church but also catechetical rooms, a rectory, and a convent, providing the spaces needed for parish ministry.
The diocese later regularized matters concerning the parish name and patron, making St. Andrew Kim Taegon a clear spiritual sign for the community. The path from parish establishment to the groundbreaking of a permanent church records how a new Catholic community found its place amid the growth of Pangyo New Town. It also connected memories of the persecution era preserved in the surrounding region with parish life in a new city, creating a foundation for carrying forward the Korean Church’s tradition of martyr faith.
