Seongsim Education Center is a retreat and formation facility of the Diocese of Suwon located in the Gogi-ri area of Suji-gu, Yongin. History & origins
The present Seongsim Education Center building was completed in 1996. The Diocese of Suwon’s official description treats this as the point from which the center became established as a retreat house. Its setting in the natural environment of Gogi-ri, near Songol Holy Site, offered from the beginning a place where participants could step away from daily noise and focus on prayer and Catholic formation.
The center did not develop as an isolated lodging and classroom facility. Within the same grounds are Seongsim social-welfare facilities, the Love House for older adults, and Simon House, a group home. The diocese describes this arrangement in light of the sharing practiced by the early Christian community. In this way, the setting has linked spiritual reflection in retreat with concrete forms of care and communal life.
The Catholic Church directory continues to classify Seongsim Education Center as a retreat and prayer house of the Diocese of Suwon and records the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Fatima as the responsible religious community. The historical character of the center lies not only in the completion of a building in the 1990s, but also in the way the site has continued to hold together prayer, formation, and proximity to communities of social care.
