About this place
Seongpo-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Ansan District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in and around Seongpo-dong, Sangnok-gu, Ansan. The Catholic Church directory records St. John the Apostle and Evangelist as the parish patron, and the present church stands on Yesulgwangjang 1-ro. It is a relatively young parish formed during the growth of planned urban districts in Ansan and functions as a local center of Catholic life close to residents’ everyday routines.
The parish has sustained not only liturgical life but also faith formation across generations and wider community activity. Diocesan reports record its youth ministry, youth retreats and training, and blood-donation campaigns as part of a broader culture of service. These activities show a parish whose identity extends beyond worship inside the church building to connecting young people, families, and neighbors. Visitors can understand Seongpo-dong as an example of a newer urban parish taking root in the local community of Ansan.
History & origins
Seongpo-dong Parish was established on September 30, 2003, as part of an expansion of parishes in the Diocese of Suwon. At the time, the Catholic Times reported that several new parishes were being created in response to population growth and the expansion of the Catholic community, and that Seongpo-dong was established in the Ansan district to serve all of Seongpo-dong. The Catholic Church directory confirms the same foundation date and patron saint.
Local cultural records explain that the parish was separated from Wolpi-dong Parish and began as an independent community. The reorganization allowed Catholics in Seongpo-dong to participate in Mass and the sacraments closer to where they lived. The parish then established its church at the present site and developed a broad range of organizations, including pastoral and liturgical groups, bereavement ministry, choir, Sunday school, youth groups, and the Legion of Mary.
Its history continued from the early stage of establishing regular parish life toward ministry for different generations and service in the wider community. Diocesan reports later record youth-focused initiatives, youth programs, and campaigns for blood and organ donation. The foundation of the parish in 2003 was therefore more than an administrative division: it marked the beginning of an independent Catholic community taking root in a rapidly growing part of Ansan.
