About this place
Seongnam-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Suwon serving Catholics in Jungwon-gu and nearby parts of Seongnam. The parish is a local center for Mass, the sacraments, Scripture, and communal life. Its present church stands along Dunchon-daero, and for decades the community has accompanied the growth of central Seongnam. Diocesan records also show that Seongnam-dong later served as a mother parish as new communities, including parishes in Bundang and Seongnam-Godeung-dong, were established.
Its significance lies not simply in its age. As Seongnam changed and the parish grew, new communities were separated from it, while Seongnam-dong continued its sacramental life, small-community activities, youth ministry, and service to neighbors. Visitors can therefore understand the parish not only as a place of worship today, but also as one of the communities that illustrates the expansion of Catholic life in Seongnam.
History & origins
Seongnam-dong Parish began in 1982 when it was separated from Sujin-dong Parish. The Diocese of Suwon’s thirtieth-anniversary chronology records that approval for the new parish was given on February 8 and that more than two thousand Catholics belonged to the community at the time of separation. Its creation was part of the broader pastoral response to rapid urbanization and population growth in Seongnam.
The community did not begin with the church building seen today. Ground was broken for a church in 1987, construction was completed in July 1991, and the first Mass was celebrated in the main sanctuary. On May 23, 1998, Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki presided over the dedication of the church. Meanwhile the parish continued to grow: the Bundang area became a separate parish in 1993, and in later years Seongnam-dong was also recorded as the mother parish of Seongnam-Godeung-dong.
The history of Seongnam-dong Parish reflects the way a parish grew with the city and then gave rise to new communities. The parish added Anna House in 2008 and was designated a youth hub parish for the Seongnam vicariate in 2010, expanding not only its buildings but also its foundations for education and community ministry. These developments form a history of a parish that has organized Catholic life locally while helping new generations and new parish communities take root.
