About this place

Seongbok-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Suwon serving Catholics in and around Seongbok-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin. The parish celebrates Mass and the sacraments and supports catechesis and community life. Its patrons are Mary and Joseph of the Holy Family, while its current parish name was simplified to “Seongbok-dong” in accordance with diocesan naming guidelines. In addition to the church proper, the parish has a separate education and cultural center, allowing liturgy, formation, fellowship, and community activities to be supported together.

Although the parish is relatively young and emerged amid rapid urban growth and population movement in the Suji area, it has expanded its educational and cultural facilities as the community grew. Visitors can therefore understand Seongbok-dong not simply as a place for Mass, but as a contemporary parish complex in which the church and education-cultural center work together to sustain formation, meetings, and communal activities.

History & origins

Seongbok-dong Parish was established on September 23, 2005, in response to population growth and new pastoral needs in the Suji area. Its original name, “Seongbok-dong St. Mary and St. Joseph,” reflected its patrons, Mary and Joseph of the Holy Family. As the community expanded, the basic facilities centered on the church building were no longer sufficient for the growing needs of catechesis, meetings, parking, and other parish activities.

Following a long-term development plan, the parish began construction of an education and cultural center in May 2018. After about a year and five months, the building was completed in October 2019 and blessed on October 20 in conjunction with the parish feast celebration. The new complex included parking, music and movement rooms, classrooms, offices, a religious-goods room, a multipurpose hall, and clergy residence, and was linked directly to the existing church. The project marked an expansion of parish infrastructure from liturgical space alone to a broader base for education, culture, and fellowship.

In September 2019 the Diocese of Suwon also changed the official parish name from “Seongbok-dong St. Mary and St. Joseph” to “Seongbok-dong” under its naming guidelines. The patrons remained part of the parish’s spiritual identity, while the formal name became centered on the locality. The parish’s history thus shows how a new-town Catholic community responded to population growth by building a wider foundation for liturgy, formation, and communal life.
