About this place

Seonbu-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Ansan District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has the Holy Family, Mary and Joseph, as its patrons. It serves Catholics in the Seonbu-dong area of Danwon-gu, Ansan, for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish activities. In keeping with its patronage by the Holy Family, the parish emphasizes not only personal faith but also the communal calling to care for one another and live the Gospel within families and among neighbors.

Since its establishment, the parish has continued activities centered on prayer, Scripture, and the shared memory of the community. In preparation for its twenty-fifth anniversary, parishioners hand-copied the New Testament and offered more than one million decades of the Rosary, a strong expression of this character. An exhibition of photographs tracing the parish’s history likewise showed that Seonbu-dong is more than a liturgical space: it is a local community in which the faith and family memories of several generations have accumulated.

History & origins

Seonbu-dong Parish was established on February 14, 1997. Amid the urban growth of Ansan and the increase in the Catholic population, an independent parish was created for the Seonbu-dong living area, with the Holy Family, Mary and Joseph, as its patrons. Since then the parish has strengthened its community life around Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis even as the neighborhood and generations of parishioners have changed.

In 2022, a Mass marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the parish’s establishment. In preparation, parishioners took part in hand-copying the New Testament and set a goal of offering one million decades of the Rosary; they ultimately offered more than 1.03 million. They also organized an exhibition of photographs from 1997 to 2022, allowing different generations of the parish to look back together on their shared journey. This was more than an anniversary event: it was a way for the community to reread its own history through acts of faith.

The church facilities have also continued to be adjusted to the changing needs of the community. Construction records of the Diocese of Suwon show an expansion project at Seonbu-dong Church from December 2025 to March 2026. Reflection at the twenty-fifth anniversary and the later expansion of the church together show a parish that has not remained only with memories of the past but has continued preparing its pastoral environment for the future.
