About this place

Seoksu-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Anyang 1 District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has St. Peter Yu Tae-chol, a Korean martyr, as its patron saint. It is the local parish where Catholics in the Seoksu-dong area of Manan-gu, Anyang, gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. The Mirinae Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary also participate in its pastoral ministry. Through its patron saint, the parish keeps the Korean Church’s tradition of martyr faith present in everyday parish life.

Seoksu-dong is one of the parishes that emerged as the Catholic community of Anyang grew and was divided from an older central parish. This background reflects a stage in the growth of the local Church when increasing population and numbers of Catholics created a need for churches closer to distinct living areas. Today Seoksu-dong Catholic Church continues liturgy, education, fellowship, and service close to local residents, linking the history of the older Anyang Catholic community’s expansion into multiple parishes with the faith lived in the neighborhood today.

History & origins

As the Catholic community in Anyang grew, a series of new parishes were separated from Central Parish. From the 1950s, Central Parish served as a major center of evangelization in the Anyang area, but urban expansion and increasing numbers of Catholics made it difficult for one parish to serve such a broad territory. New parishes were therefore established according to local living areas, and Seoksu-dong eventually received its own independent parish community.

The official Catholic directory records August 1, 1983, as the founding date of Seoksu-dong Parish. The history of Central Parish in the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia likewise records the separation of Seoksu-dong Parish in 1983. This enabled Catholics in Seoksu-dong to move beyond dependence on the larger central parish and continue Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish activities independently within their own neighborhood.

When commemorating the seventieth anniversary of Central Parish, the Diocese of Suwon noted that communities separated from Central Parish later became sources of still more new parishes, expanding the pastoral network of Anyang and nearby areas. The birth of Seoksu-dong Parish belongs to this process. The 1983 division was not simply an administrative adjustment but a change in local evangelization that placed Catholic communities closer to the actual living areas of the faithful.
