About this place

Seoho Catholic Church is a parish in the Gwonseon District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has St. Teresa of Jesus as its patron saint. It is a local parish where Catholics in western Suwon gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. It was established as an independent community during a period when Suwon was expanding westward, so that the faithful could practice their faith closer to their daily living area.

The idea of “division and growth” is important for understanding the character of Seoho Parish. As the older Seodun-dong Parish responded to increasing numbers of Catholics and urban expansion, it secured sites for future parishes and divided its large community, leading to the birth of Seoho Parish. The parish therefore represents more than the construction of a new building: it is the result of a pastoral structure being subdivided so that Catholics in an expanding city could center their faith life on a nearby church. Today Seoho Catholic Church continues to serve as one of the local centers of faith in the Gwonseon District within this history of community formation.

History & origins

The establishment of Seoho Parish began with a plan to divide parishes in response to urban expansion and the growth of the Catholic population in western Suwon. During the 1990s, Seodun-dong Parish prepared for the long-term division of its wide territory by securing land for several future parishes. As part of this effort, it purchased about 534 pyeong of land for the future Seoho Parish on October 21, 1994.

The Diocese of Suwon established Seoho Parish on February 9, 1996, together with Chilbo Parish and Haan-dong Parish. A Catholic Times report from the period stated that the new Seoho Parish would serve Seodun-dong, Gosaek-dong, and part of Pyeong-dong in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. The official Catholic directory records the same date as the parish’s founding and lists St. Teresa of Jesus as its patron.

This history illustrates a pastoral approach in which a diocese builds a denser local network by establishing new parishes close to where Catholics live rather than allowing one large parish to expand indefinitely. The fact that land was secured before the parish itself was established shows that the division was part of long-term preparation for urban growth. Once separated from the Seodun-dong community, Seoho Parish became a stable base for Catholics in western Suwon to form a local community of faith close to home.
