About this place
Seo-Hanam Catholic Church is a parish in the Hanam–Yangpyeong District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has Mary Help of Christians as its patron. It currently serves Catholics in the Gamil area of Hanam for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life, continuing the pastoral life of the community that was long known as “Seobu.” In an area marked by rapid urban development and population movement, maintaining a Catholic community close to where parishioners now live is an important part of its role.
The parish’s present form reflects major changes in western Hanam. Limitations of the former church and property, together with the development of new apartment complexes, shifted the center of parishioners’ daily life and created the need for a more suitable base and a new church. The community has continued parish life even in temporary and commercial-building spaces and has prepared for a permanent church with support from other parishes. This process shows that the continuity of the faithful, rather than a single building, lies at the heart of the parish’s identity.
History & origins
The predecessor of Seo-Hanam Parish, Seobu Parish, was established on February 24, 1988. It served a broad area of western Hanam for many years under the name “Seobu” and had Mary Help of Christians as its patron. As the urban structure of Hanam changed, both the parish’s living area and the conditions surrounding its church underwent major changes.
According to material from the Diocese of Suwon, the former Seobu church faced serious constraints in rebuilding on its existing property because of greenbelt regulations and land conditions. The small church required several Sunday Masses to accommodate the faithful, while large apartment developments across the Seo-Hanam interchange shifted the center of parishioners’ daily life. The community therefore made it a major task to secure land and a church closer to the new residential area for long-term pastoral ministry.
Other parishes also joined in supporting this process. In 2024, Bundang St. John Parish collected and delivered a special offering to assist the construction of the Seo-Hanam (Seobu) church. The official Catholic directory now records the community as “Seo-Hanam Parish.” Its path since 1988—adjusting its base and name in response to urban development and population movement—shows that the parish’s history lies less in the uninterrupted use of one building than in the continuing formation of a Catholic community among local residents.
