About this place
Seocheon-dong Catholic Church belongs to the Yeongtong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves the Catholic community centered on Seocheon-dong in Giheung-gu, Yongin. The parish has the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patron. Although it is geographically located in Yongin, it is closely linked with the parishes of the Yeongtong District in the diocesan pastoral structure. It is a local center of faith for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and the communal life of the faithful.
As a relatively young parish, Seocheon-dong has placed particular value on relationships and participation among parishioners. Diocesan records describe the installation of a communication box through which people could anonymously share opinions and difficulties, together with a pastoral emphasis on “respect and kindness.” This illustrates how a community formed in a newly developed residential area sought not only to establish a place for worship but also to build a parish culture in which members listen to and care for one another.
History & origins
The Diocese of Suwon established Seocheon Parish on August 28, 2012. The official Catholic directory in Korea records the same date as the founding date of today’s Seocheon-dong Parish. With the Catholic community of the Seocheon area in Giheung-gu, Yongin, beginning life as an independent pastoral unit, a stable foundation was created for Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis in the newly developed residential area.
In March 2013, the diocese regularized the parish name as “Seocheon-dong” and approved the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patron. This gave the new community its official name and a clear spiritual sign. Alongside building its institutional foundations, the parish also paid attention to communication within the community. In 2018 it installed a box for parishioners to submit opinions and concerns anonymously and presented “respect and kindness” as a pastoral goal.
In 2022 the parish marked the tenth anniversary of its establishment. Its first decade was a period in which a new parish acquired its name, patron, and pastoral framework while parishioners formed relationships and grew into a stable community. The history of Seocheon-dong Parish shows the Diocese of Suwon’s pastoral response to the creation and settlement of new Catholic communities in the rapidly growing Yongin and Yeongtong living area.
