About this place

Sema Catholic Church is a parish of the Osan District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in northern Osan, including parts of Segyo, Sucheong, Naesammi, and Oesammi. The parish is dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle, and its church stands on Cheonghak-ro in Osan. It is a relatively young parish created to serve a new residential area formed through housing development and population movement in the northern part of the city.

The parish has also shown interest in issues of life, the environment, and social sharing. Diocesan materials describe efforts to connect parish life with care for vulnerable people and with initiatives that protect life and the environment. Visitors can therefore understand Sema not simply as a church in a new town, but as a parish that has sought to build Catholic community in a newly formed urban area while engaging with social and ecological concerns.

History & origins

Sema Parish was established on August 31, 2010, as new residents moved into the developing Segyo district in northern Osan. It began under the provisional name “Sucheong-dong Catholic Church,” with a community of roughly two hundred households and just over five hundred Catholics. Its creation continued the process of reorganizing pastoral care in Osan as the city expanded and new residential districts emerged.

In 2011 the parish name was changed to Sema. The community then worked toward a stable church of its own, and in 2013 built and moved into the present church on Cheonghak-ro. Within only a few years, the parish moved from a provisional new community to an independent parish with a settled name and its own church building.

After settling into the new church, Sema grew as a parish serving several neighborhoods in northern Osan. Diocesan reports also record activities related to protection of life and the environment, support for vulnerable people, and education for social-cooperative initiatives. The parish’s history can therefore be seen as a response to new-town development that progressed from parish foundation and physical settlement to broader engagement with the local community.
