About this place

Sangsin Catholic Church is a parish in the Hwaseong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, formed after separation from Balan Parish. Its patron is St. Luke the Evangelist, and it serves as a local Catholic center in the Hyangnam area of Hwaseong for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

The present church was prepared after a period in which the new parish lived its faith without an independent permanent space. It therefore represents more than a building for worship: it preserves the story of parishioners forming a community in temporary facilities and eventually establishing a lasting spiritual home.

Having St. Luke the Evangelist as patron naturally points toward the parish's mission to receive and proclaim the Gospel. Sangsin also shows how a newly established parish in a changing part of Hwaseong can gradually create both a community and a church through sustained prayer and participation by local Catholics. The community’s experience of enduring inadequate temporary conditions before the new church was built helps explain why the present building represents not only architecture but also the unity and sustained participation of its parishioners.

History & origins

Sangsin Parish was established on December 20, 2016, after separation from Balan Parish. Its territory included several villages and developing areas around Hyangnam. Although the new parish had been canonically created, it did not yet possess a proper church building. The community began parish life and celebrated Mass in a farm warehouse that had been renovated for temporary use.

After continuing its faith life in this provisional space, the community prepared to construct a new church. Ground was broken at the present site on October 17, 2020. Construction overlapped with the COVID-19 period, yet parishioners continued to participate through prayer and spiritual offerings. The Diocese of Suwon records, for example, a parish campaign of offering the Rosary for the building of the church.

About fourteen months after the groundbreaking, the entrance Mass was celebrated in the new church on December 4, 2021. The building, with one basement level and three floors above ground, provided a church, catechetical rooms, and a priest's residence among other facilities. It gave the parish a stable setting for liturgy, education, and fellowship beyond the limitations of the temporary church.

The history of Sangsin is therefore not one of receiving a finished church immediately after parish establishment. It is the story of a community that began in a converted warehouse and, through prayer and shared preparation, created a permanent church of its own. That process remains central to understanding Sangsin Catholic Church today. The fact that parish life began in a converted farm warehouse, together with the record of a shared Rosary offering for the new church, shows that the construction history was closely tied to spiritual preparation. The entrance into the completed church therefore marked not only the completion of a facility but a new stage of maturity for a community that had endured temporary conditions together.
