About this place
Sangnoksu Catholic Church is a parish in the Ansan District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Paul the Apostle as its patron. It is a local Catholic community in Sangnok-gu, Ansan, where the faithful gather around Mass and the sacraments and grow together through catechesis and the study of Scripture.
An important feature of the parish is its early experience of going out to people rather than simply waiting for them to come to church. From its early years it conducted home-visiting catechesis for elderly people and patients who could not easily travel. Later, the parish also developed community-wide practices of copying and studying the Bible.
Sangnoksu Catholic Church therefore combines the basic role of a territorial parish with a culture of outreach and attention to the Word of God. Its tradition of approaching people who found it difficult to access church life, and of making Scripture a shared field of study and celebration, gives the community a distinctive pastoral character. The missionary image of St. Paul the Apostle, the parish patron, also fits this experience of a faith that goes out to others and helps present the parish not merely as a local facility but as a community carrying the Gospel into daily life.
History & origins
Sangnoksu Parish was established in the Ansan area of the Diocese of Suwon on January 20, 1995. Almost immediately, the new community looked for ways to reach people who could not easily come to church. In April of the same year, it began a home-visiting catechesis team that went to elderly people and patients with limited mobility to teach the faith in their homes.
The visiting catechesis went beyond simply delivering lessons. Trained catechists provided one-to-one instruction and also became companions in conversation and helped with ordinary needs. In the autumn of 1995, the Catholic Times reported that the program had already led to new baptisms, presenting it as a form of active evangelization that also functioned as home-based care. From its earliest period, the parish's mission was thus closely connected with the concrete lives of local people.
Over time, a second emphasis developed around studying the Word of God as an entire community. According to the Diocese of Suwon, the parish began a parish-wide Bible copying movement in 2008. In 2009, about four hundred people took part in a Bible Festival that included written contests, Bible quizzes, and a concluding Mass. Personal reading of Scripture was expanded into a shared process of study and celebration.
This history shows Sangnoksu growing from a newly established territorial parish into a community shaped by outreach catechesis and active participation in Scripture. The early home visits and the later Bible movement took place in different periods, but both expressed the same direction: faith was not to remain confined within a church building but to be carried into people's daily lives and shared by the community as a whole. The early home-visiting catechesis reached people who could not easily access the church, while the Bible movement more than a decade later helped those already gathered in the parish learn the Word together. Although their audiences and methods differed, both show a continuing commitment to faith formation as a core of community building.
