About this place

Sangha Catholic Church is a parish in the Giheung District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Moses as its patron. Catholics from Sangha-dong and nearby areas of Giheung-gu, Yongin, gather here for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and fellowship. The parish's official website continues to present the community under the name Sangha Catholic Church of the Diocese of Suwon.

The parish complex developed as a center not only for liturgy but also for catechesis, meetings, and common activities. Because the present facilities were created in stages after the parish itself had been established, the building reflects the community's process of growth rather than a single completed project from the outset.

With St. Moses as patron, Sangha is the settled home of a community that separated from the Singal area and gradually acquired its own name and church. In a rapidly changing part of Giheung, it provides a stable center where Catholics can continue liturgical, educational, and communal life as one parish. The official chronology’s detailed record of movement from a temporary church through a hall to the completed sanctuary also shows clearly that the present complex grew step by step according to the needs of the community.

History & origins

Preparation for an independent Sangha community became concrete in December 2003 with the purchase of land for a church. On October 1, 2004, Sangha Parish was established after separation from Singal Parish, and in December of the same year St. Moses was chosen as patron. The new community began parish life by celebrating its first Mass in a temporary church.

Preparations for a permanent church continued through changes in the site and design. The present church property was purchased in May 2005, followed by design and building-permit procedures. In March 2006, before the building was fully completed, the first Sunday Mass was celebrated in the first-floor hall of the present structure. Building-use approval later that year allowed parish life to shift progressively to the current location.

When the third-floor sanctuary was completed in August 2007, the community celebrated an entrance Mass. The liturgical completion of the place continued, however, and on September 4, 2011, the new church was formally dedicated by Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon. The sequence from temporary church to first-floor hall and then to the third-floor sanctuary shows how the parish grew together with the building itself.

In 2014 the parish celebrated the tenth anniversary of its establishment. Sangha's history therefore did not begin with a fully finished church, but developed through parish establishment, confirmation of a patron, acquisition of land, staged occupation, and final dedication. This process explains the present church as a spiritual home created over time through the work of the community. Because the official chronology records the successive stages of land acquisition, permits, and occupation in detail, Sangha’s place history is more accurately read as a sequence of changing uses than as a single completion date. At each stage the community continued celebrating Mass and carrying out parish life while preparing the next space, culminating in the 2011 dedication.
