About this place

Sangdaewon Catholic Church is a parish of the Seongnam District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. The Catholic Church in Korea directory lists three Korean Martyr Saints as its patrons: St. Beom Laurentius, St. Na Petrus, and St. Jeong Jacobus. Having these three Korean martyrs as patrons directly connects the faith of the local community with the Korean Church's tradition of martyrdom.

The parish took root amid the industrialization and residential development of Seongnam. It is a place for the celebration of Mass and the sacraments as well as a center where local Catholics form relationships in faith. The diocese's own account especially describes Sangdaewon as a community that stayed close to the poor and marginalized and built trust with residents of the surrounding area.

Sangdaewon Catholic Church therefore represents more than a church building in one neighborhood. It is a place that reflects the life and care of a Catholic community formed through Seongnam's social changes. The memory of Korean martyrs and a pastoral tradition of reaching out to neighbors can both be encountered here. In particular, the unusual patronage of three martyrs rather than a single saint continually recalls the witness of the Korean Church within the ordinary life of the local parish.

History & origins

The background of the Sangdaewon community is closely tied to the rapid population movement that transformed the Seongnam area in the late 1960s. In 1969, residents relocated from Seoul settled in what was then Jungbu-myeon of Gwangju-gun, creating the large Gwangju settlement. After Sujin-dong Parish was established in 1971, Catholics in Sangdaewon-ri still had to walk a considerable distance to attend Mass. As the new residential area expanded quickly, Sangdaewon increasingly needed an independent Catholic center.

The Diocese of Suwon and the Missionary Society of St. Columban responded in cooperation, and a church was established in Sangdaewon in 1979. The Catholic Church in Korea directory gives June 30, 1979, as the date of the parish's establishment. This meant that, during a period of intense urbanization and industrialization in Seongnam, local Catholics gained an independent community where they could celebrate Mass and the sacraments close to home.

The parish's early and subsequent pastoral life remained closely connected with people living in the industrial area. The diocesan history describes Masses and prayer meetings for workers, along with efforts to respond to the spiritual and physical hardships of residents. Its social welfare work also reached marginalized neighbors regardless of religion, helping the parish build trust within the broader community.

The history of Sangdaewon Parish is therefore not simply a story of constructing a church. It is a story of Catholics forming a community amid rapid urban change and then extending that community's care to neighbors in need. The parish's present remembrance of Korean Martyr Saints as patrons places this locally rooted faith within the longer tradition of Christian witness in Korea. The diocesan-missionary cooperation provided the institutional basis for establishing the church, while concrete care for local residents gave the community its pastoral character. In this sense, the parish is an example of urban development and Catholic pastoral life taking shape in close interaction.
