About this place

Sangchon Catholic Church is a parish in the Gwonseon District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with the Immaculate Heart of Mary as its patron. It serves western Suwon as a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and fellowship, while the present community also inherits the much older Catholic roots of the Geumgok mission station.

A distinctive feature of Sangchon is that it did not suddenly appear with modern urban development. A small mission-station community maintained the faith over many decades before eventually becoming a parish. The church therefore allows visitors to understand not only present parish life but also the continuity of lay Catholic faith in western Suwon.

The devotion expressed in its patronage of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the memory inherited from the former mission station together shape the parish's identity. For present-day Catholics it is an ordinary territorial parish, yet its background also makes it a place where several generations of Catholic faith in western Suwon can be traced. This continuity between mission-station and parish life means that Sangchon cannot be understood only by the relatively recent date of parish establishment; its identity reflects a much longer continuity of local Catholic faith.

History & origins

The roots of Sangchon Parish go back to the Geumgok mission station, established in 1931. The small Catholic community that began in a village on the western side of Suwon maintained its faith over many decades and formed the foundation for a future independent parish. At the parish's twenty-fifth anniversary, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon likewise emphasized that the community's history reaches much further back than the official parish date.

As the community grew from the Geumgok mission station, Sangchon Parish was formally established on January 26, 1999. In December of the same year, ground work began at the church site, marking the start of the construction process needed by the new parish. The desire for a church that had developed during the mission-station period was now taking concrete architectural form.

Construction continued, and the community entered the new church in April 2001. The church was dedicated in July of the same year. The movement from mission station to parish and then to an independent church building shows how a long-established local Catholic community gradually acquired both canonical structure and a permanent place of worship.

In 2024 the parish celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary with a thanksgiving Mass and community festival. The event recalled not only twenty-five years as a parish but the longer path beginning with Geumgok mission station in 1931. Sangchon Catholic Church today is the result of those intertwined memories of mission-station faith, parish growth, and church construction. This is why the diocese, at the twenty-fifth anniversary, looked back not only on the parish years but also on the earlier mission-station period. Parish establishment was less the beginning of the community than a turning point at which long-standing mission-station faith became an independent pastoral unit, and the 2001 entrance and dedication completed that transition with a permanent physical home.
