About this place
Sanbuk Catholic Church is a parish of the Gwangju District in the Diocese of Suwon, serving the liturgical and faith life of Catholics in and around Sanbuk-myeon, Yeoju. The Catholic Directory of Korea lists Saint Teresa of Calcutta as the parish patron and shows that the community developed from a pastoral foundation that had previously been connected with Toechon Parish.
Sanbuk is a largely rural area some distance from major urban centers. The parish church therefore serves as a local center where Catholics can gather regularly for Mass, catechesis, and community life. Unlike a large city parish, its role is closely tied to linking believers within a relatively dispersed local area, and the communal experience accumulated during its years as a mission station continues into parish life today.
Visitors can understand Sanbuk Catholic Church not merely as a church building in Yeoju, but as the present form of a local Catholic community that grew from a mission station under Toechon Parish into an independent parish. Its identity under the patronage of Saint Teresa of Calcutta and its roots in a rural community are important for understanding the place.
History & origins
The history of the Sanbuk community as a parish begins before its formal establishment, during its years as a mission station. According to the Diocese of Suwon, Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki, then bishop of the diocese, took a direct pastoral interest in the Sanbuk community and in building a foundation for the mission station. A chapel was subsequently prepared, and its dedication on April 15, 2010 gave local Catholics a stable place for liturgical gatherings.
The mission community continued its faith life around the new chapel. In 2015 it celebrated a thanksgiving Mass for the fifth anniversary of the chapel's dedication. Diocesan records from this period show that Sanbuk had become a continuing local Catholic community rather than a temporary gathering. At the time it was a mission station of Toechon Parish, and roughly five years of mission-station life helped establish the communal base needed for future independence. The fact that the community continued commemorating the chapel’s dedication up to the period just before parish establishment shows that a stable worship space and shared communal memory were already in place before the administrative elevation.
On June 21, 2016, the Diocese of Suwon separated Sanbuk from Toechon Parish and established it as a new parish. The diocesan historical timeline records the creation of Sanbuk Parish on the same date. The former mission community thereby became an independent parish unit, enabling local Catholics to organize liturgy, catechesis, and community activities around their own parish.
In 2017, the first anniversary of the parish's establishment was marked with a thanksgiving Mass and a community event. The progression from the dedication of a mission chapel to the creation of an independent parish shows that Sanbuk did not emerge merely through an administrative division; it first developed a local Catholic community and a stable worship space, and then grew into a parish.
