About this place

Sanbon Catholic Church is a parish of the Gunpo–Uiwang District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in and around Sanbon-dong, Gunpo. Its patron is Our Lady of the Rosary, and the parish functions as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and devotional life within a dense urban residential area.

Established during the growth of the Sanbon new town, the parish has the character of a metropolitan new-town parish that gathered a large Catholic population within a relatively short period. As the community grew, new parishes were separated in surrounding areas, making Sanbon one of the communities that helped shape the expansion of Catholic life in Gunpo.

Devotional associations such as the Legion of Mary and other parish activities continue today, and Sanbon participates in regional pastoral life with the other parishes of the Gunpo–Uiwang District. The church offers visitors an example of how a relatively young parish created during metropolitan new-town development became an established local Catholic community. Within a dense apartment-based residential area, the church also has significance as a local center that helps form community relationships across generations and neighborhood groups, not only as a place for individual religious practice.

History & origins

Sanbon Parish was established on January 20, 1995. It was created during a period when the Diocese of Suwon was establishing a number of new parishes in response to the rapid growth of new towns and residential areas in the Seoul metropolitan region, and it began as an independent community for Catholics living in the developing Sanbon area.

Population and Catholic growth in Gunpo continued to change the parish map. When Geumjeong Parish was established on January 26, 1999, 492 households came from Gunpo Parish and 503 households from Sanbon, forming a new community of 995 households. The transfer of such a substantial number of families from Sanbon only four years after its foundation indicates how quickly the Catholic population of the new town had expanded. This parish division was more than an administrative boundary change: the household figures make visible how the Catholic population and residential area once served by the existing parishes had grown to a scale that required a new parish community.

The historical timeline of the Diocese of Suwon records a Mass celebrating the 25th anniversary of Sanbon Parish on October 11, 2020. By then, the community that had begun during the new-town development had passed through a generation and become an established local parish, continuing devotional and apostolic activities within the Gunpo–Uiwang District. The twenty-fifth anniversary also marked the point at which a community born during rapid new-town development had accumulated a generation of parish life and become a settled local church rather than a temporary response to development.

Sanbon's history illustrates how a parish created amid the new-town development of the 1990s could itself become a source for further parish division. It is a clear example of how Catholic expansion and the subdivision of parish territories in the metropolitan region followed the actual growth of local communities.
