About this place

Sagang Catholic Church is a parish of the Hwaseong District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving the Catholic community centered on Songsan-myeon and the western part of Hwaseong. Its patrons are Mary and Joseph of the Holy Family, and the parish continues its ministry with a strong emphasis on faith lived within families and the wider community.

The Sagang community existed for many years as a mission station before becoming a parish and is now remembered as one of the mother parishes from which other communities in western Hwaseong developed. The later separation of Seosin and Mado parishes from Sagang reflects the wider expansion of Catholic life in the region. The network of local Catholic life built up during the mission-station period and later carried into the independent parish and its daughter communities is an important background for understanding Sagang’s present identity.

Today Sagang Church is a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, devotional life, and community gathering. Its 50th-anniversary activities—including Scripture transcription, the Rosary, faith formation, and improvements to parish facilities—show a community that does not simply commemorate its past but seeks to carry that history into present Catholic life.

History & origins

The Sagang Catholic community began in 1951 as Sagang Mission Station under Wangnim Parish. The mission station became a local center where Catholics in western Hwaseong could maintain their communal faith life, and later, under Namyang Parish, it developed the foundation needed to become an independent parish. More than two decades passed between the beginning of the mission station and the creation of the parish, and the experience of maintaining a local Catholic community within the pastoral structures of Wangnim and later Namyang provided the foundation for eventual independence.

On October 13, 1975, Sagang Mission Station was separated from Namyang and elevated to parish status. As Catholic life expanded in the area, Seosin Parish was separated from Sagang in 1995 and Mado Parish in 2011. These divisions show that Sagang became a mother parish that contributed to the formation of Catholic communities across a broader area of western Hwaseong. The fact that two daughter parishes were created at different times shows how Sagang’s territory was gradually reorganized as the western Hwaseong living area changed, and how the growth of one parish could lead to the independence of new local communities.

In 2025, the parish celebrated the 50th anniversary of its establishment. The community offered a commemorative Mass and presented a handwritten Bible and a 50-year parish history. In preparation for the anniversary period, it also improved its facilities through the reconstruction of educational and dining spaces and the installation of an elevator and solar equipment. The anniversary therefore combined remembrance of the past with preparation for future pastoral life. The improvements made around the jubilee were more than commemorative projects; they also represented an effort to adapt an older parish complex to present needs for education, fellowship, and accessibility.

Sagang's history can thus be read as a progression from mission station to independent parish and then to a mother parish from which other communities emerged. The present church carries forward the continuity of faith maintained through those successive stages.
