Sachangri Mission Station

History & origins

Sachang-ri Mission Station was established on August 23, 1970, against the background of the long Catholic tradition of the Yanggan Catholic villages. At the time, the mission served not only Sachang-ri but nearby settlements such as Jeongmun-ri and Yo-ri and parts of Hyangnam, providing a center of Catholic life for believers living far from the parish church.

In December 1979, the community formed a building committee to create its own chapel. Peter Song Gi-deok, the committee chairman, donated a 100-pyeong parcel next to his home, while other Catholics raised construction funds. Through this voluntary effort, a 32-pyeong brick chapel was built and completed on May 9, 1982. On December 14 of the same year, the mission station was formally dedicated in a ceremony presided over by Fr. Hwang Ik-seong, vicar general of the Diocese of Suwon. The donation of land and the raising of construction funds by local Catholics show that the chapel was not simply an institution provided from above, but a foundation for religious life created directly by the mission community itself.

The community later organized groups such as the Marian association, vocation supporters, and funeral fellowship, continuing an active local Catholic life. Over time, however, demographic and transportation changes made Hyangnam Parish more accessible, and the independent role of the mission station diminished. A diocesan account published in 2023 noted that most members were then attending Sunday Mass and receiving the sacraments at Hyangnam Church.

The history of Sachang-ri differs from that of a large parish: it records how rural Catholics donated land, raised funds themselves, and maintained a modest community space. The continuity between the older Yanggan Catholic-village tradition and the lay-led construction of the mission station in the late twentieth century is a defining feature of the site's history. In this way, the history of Sachang-ri gives a concrete picture of how a rural mission station was formed and sustained through the responsibility and participation of local Catholics.
