About this place

Pungsan Catholic Church is a parish of the Second Vicariate, Hanam-Yangpyeong District, in the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in the Pungsan and Deokpung living areas of Hanam. It is dedicated to the three Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael and is registered in the official Catholic directory as an independent parish.

Its dedication to the three Archangels together is a distinctive feature of the community. Through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, prayer, and fellowship, the parish sustains the faith life of local Catholics. The church is not only a liturgical space but also a place where parishioners learn, meet, and share responsibility for community life.

Pungsan has the clear character of a modern parish rooted in an expanding residential area of Hanam. The church now provides a stable base for liturgy and community life, serving as a pastoral center that allows Catholics to continue their faith close to home even as the surrounding city changes.

History & origins

Pungsan Parish was separated from Sinjang Parish in September 2008 in response to new residential development and the growth of the Catholic population in Hanam. The Catholic Church directory gives September 2, 2008, as its establishment date. Because the new parish initially had no church of its own, Mass continued to be celebrated at Sinjang Parish through January 2009; from February, the community used a hall in the St. Simon Cultural Center there as a temporary church.

Work on an independent church moved forward quickly. On May 24, 2009, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided at a groundbreaking Mass and ceremony on the new site in Pungsan-dong, Hanam. The project was planned to provide stable spaces for liturgy, catechesis, meetings, and the ordinary life of the parish community.

The building was completed in April 2011, and parish life continued there. Following the Diocese of Suwon's practice of celebrating the formal dedication of a church after construction debts have been settled, the dedication of Pungsan Catholic Church took place on November 7, 2021, about a decade after completion.

This process clearly shows how a newly separated community moved from temporary liturgical spaces to its own church and, over time, completed the material and communal foundations of parish life. The long interval between completion and dedication also illustrates that, in Catholic practice, beginning to use a church and formally dedicating it need not occur at the same time. Pungsan began its liturgical and pastoral life in the completed building while continuing to fulfill the responsibilities associated with construction, and only later celebrated the dedication. This distinction is an important part of understanding the building history of Pungsan Catholic Church. The dedication can therefore be understood not as a single event immediately following the parish’s creation, but as a later stage of completion reached after the new parish had spent years consolidating its communal foundations.
